About 200 boats made their way to the Ria Formosa, this Saturday, to participate in a protest against the demolitions on the islands. Barrier Islands residents' associations demonstrated against the destruction of houses, but also against the lack of investment in the Ria Formosa.

The protest started from Faro, passed through the different housing nuclei of the island of Culatra and swelled ranks. Upon arriving in Olhão, he found more demonstrators, who were waiting for the nautical procession at the Mercados de Olhão.

According to José Lezinho, representative of the inhabitants of the Hangares nucleus, in Ilha da Culatra, the demonstration wanted to demonstrate that there would be "more important investments to be made in the Ria Formosa" to preserve it. "They are carrying out the demolitions, but we run the risk of the Ria dying", he said, to the Sul Informação.

At issue are, among other things, the sewage that is discharged directly into the Ria Formosa. A situation whose resolution, the president of the Association of Residents of Ilha da Culatra Sílvia Padinha has been defending, should have been taken care of by the Polis Society.

“It's like a person who is very sick and who, instead of investing the money they have in the cure, undergoes a plastic operation”, gives, as an example, Sílvia Padinha.

Next Friday, the associations of residents of the barrier islands of Ria Formosa, which together form the platform «Je Suis Ilhéu», will travel to Lisbon, to manifest themselves at the Assembly of the Republic, where they will be discussed, in Plenary, several proposals regarding the future of the Ria Formosa and the housing centers of the islands.
