airport-of-Faro61The Algarve will be closer to Spain during the summer with the connection from Faro to Madrid on direct Air Nostrum flights, announced the airline of the Iberia group. The reopening of this route, simultaneously with the new direct connection to Faro Barcelona, operated by Vueling, raises the expectations of the president of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA) regarding the performance of the Spanish market in the Algarve destination in 2015.

«This is excellent news, which the region aspired to for almost a decade, and it is also the result of the intense work of the Tourism Region to ensure direct flights between Faro and the main Iberian airports», declares Desidério Silva.

According to ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal, from 1 June to 30 September the route Faro-Madrid will have three weekly flights in each direction, bringing the Algarve airport closer to other domestic and international destinations on the Iberian network.

"We ended the year 2014 with 25,5 percent more overnight stays from Spanish tourists in the region's hotels, which was a remarkable growth, and in 2015, with these two routes, we could even surpass the barrier of a million overnight stays", he considers the president.

Air Nostrum will operate the Madrid route with aircraft up to 100 passengers, offering around 8500 seats and 102 movements. In the months of June, July and September, it will fly on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays, and from 21st July to 1st September, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

The Vueling connection to Barcelona, starting on June 20, will have two weekly flights, with departures on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and will last until September 12th.

According to Desidério Silva, this is "a first step" towards the consolidation of both air routes and the future expansion of operations during the year.
