Visitors to monuments in the Algarve increase 5,1% in 2014

Fortress of Sagres_15The monuments overseen by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve – Fortaleza de Sagres, Hermitage of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar and Roman Ruins of Milreu – had an overall increase of about 15.300 visitors in 2014, which translated into an increase of 5,1% compared to the previous year.

In total, around 316.500 people visited these facilities, of which around 70% are foreign visitors.

The Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve (DRCAlg) stresses, in a press release, that «it has sought to promote and promote the monuments it protects through of the new site, from links to sites of other organizations and institutions, and also by the development of micro-sites about monuments, whose contents can also be accessed in www.monumentosdoalgarve.pt.

Also the creation in 2014 of DIVAM – Program for the Promotion and Enhancement of Monuments, which has a partnership with various cultural associations and municipalities in the Algarve, offering visitors and residents a diverse range of cultural programming offers, «has contributed to greater diversity in the Complementary cultural offer of the monuments of the Algarve, with the aim of making nearby communities to revisit their heritage».

Alcalar Megalithic MonumentsDRCAlg has also developed «an effort to improve the services and conditions for the enjoyment of the monuments, either through specific maintenance interventions or with the Requalification and Valorization Project of the Sagres Promontory».

In this case, the first phase of the program is almost completed, with one of the main contracts, the “Rehabilitation of the walls and scenic lighting”, having been completed at the end of 2014.

The second phase, already with the financing contract signed with CCDRAlgarve (and financing through QREN and PIPITAL), awaits the signing of the financing contract for Turismo de Portugal (through the PIT) so that the contract for the rehabilitation of the four bodies corresponding to the building of the 90s.

One of these spaces will host the Exhibition Center of the Promontory of Sagres with contents to explain the site and the theme of the European Discoveries in the perspective of the first process of global globalization, considering: commercial exchanges, the evolution of scientific knowledge, the dissemination of new products food, the discovery of others in their diversity and the spread of the Portuguese language in the world.

These and the other promotion and dissemination actions of the Sagres Promontory «should take place during the year 2015, and it is estimated that the entire physical and financial execution of the Sagres Promontory Rehabilitation and Valorization project will be completed in 2016».

Fortress of Sagres SmallThe Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve also delivered, last week, a candidacy of the Promontório de Sagres for “Mark of European Heritage” 2015, an initiative of the European Union of 2006 that «may, by its recognition, contribute to the reinforcement of the valorization of this unique heritage of the Algarve».
