Algarve octopusResearchers from the Center for Marine Sciences (CCMAR) of the University of Algarve will promote on Friday, January 16, from 17:30 pm to 20:30 pm, another Tertúlia on octopus fishing, taking place in the Seminar Room of the UAlg Rectory, on the Gambelas Campus, Faro.

Fisheries professionals, researchers and managers will discuss together the current situation and the future of this fishery. The main objective, according to CCMAR, is the sharing of knowledge that can be useful for the future of octopus fishing in the Algarve.

The Tertúlias do Polvo is an initiative of the Fisheries Research Group of the Center for Marine Sciences (CCMAR) of the University of Algarve and began in April 2014.

So far, all associations of octopus fishermen, CCMAR researchers and public entities involved in octopus management have been invited to these sessions.

During the Tertúlia, participants will be invited to build visions about the future of octopus fishing in the Algarve, based on their wishes for this activity. "The idea is that all participants share the responsibility for managing this fishery and thus reflect on what must be done today to achieve the desired future."

According to CCMAR, «the creation of visions and the implementation format will be developed by working groups during the Tertúlia and at the end we will try to identify the common points between the
several views created».

Visions can focus on specific themes such as enforcement issues, bait used, size
minimum octopus capture, but may also include topics related to octopus marketing, innovation, manufacturing industry development, marketing and communication, research, among others.
