São Gabriel RestaurantThe Algarvian restaurant São Gabriel, in Almancil, is one of two new Portuguese establishments on the restricted list of Michelin-starred restaurants for 2015.

In addition to keeping in the Guia Vermelho for Portugal and Spain the restaurants that were there in 2014 – four in the Algarve and one in the Alentejo -, Portugal manages to add the restaurant located in Quinta do Lago, which returns to the list after a year of break, and the establishment Pedro Lemos, in Port.

In the next edition of this prestigious publication, presented this Wednesday in Marbella, Spain, the Algarve will once again be highlighted, for maintaining two restaurants with two Michelin stars: Ocean, by Armação de Pêra, by the Austrian Hans Neuner and Vila Joya , in Albufeira, by Dieter Koshina, also from Austria.

But it “loses” the exclusivity of two-star establishments in Portugal, as Belcanto, by José Avilez, in Lisbon, also deserves this distinction.

Michelin Guide Portugal and Spain 2015Good news for Portugal, and in a double dose, since, in addition to having another restaurant on a second level of excellence (the Michelin Guide assigns it from one to three stars), it places the Portuguese José Avilez and his chef in a very restricted group of kitchen David Jesus.

The 2015 Michelin Guide also distinguishes 11 Portuguese restaurants with one star. And, of these, three are in the Algarve. The restaurants Henrique Leis, in Almancil, by Henrique Leis and Willie's, in Vilamoura, by Willie Wurger, are listed in the guide, while São Gabriel, with chef Leonel Pereira, regained the star it lost in 2014.

A victory for the establishment's new management, which took over this restaurant in 2013. The change of owner and chef will have called into question the maintenance of the Michelin star, in 2014, but the work carried out seems to have convinced the publication's jury that the quality has remained, despite the changes, and to mend the hand.

Also new to the guide is the restaurant Pedro Lemos, in Porto, of Pedro Lemos. The L'And Vineyards restaurant, in Montemor-o-Novo, by Miguel Laffan, is back on the list.

The other representatives of Portugal in the 2015 Michelin Guide are: Casa da Calçada, by Vítor Matos, in Amarante; Eleven, by Joachim Koerper, in Lisbon; Trading Post, by João Rodrigues, in Lisbon; Fortaleza do Guincho, by Vincent Farges, in Cascais; Il Gallo d'Oro, by Benoît Sinthon, in Funchal; and Yeatman, by Ricardo Costa, in Vila Nova de Gaia.
