«Human Health and Environmental Nature Risk Factors» was the theme of the 5th Regional Meeting of Environmental Volunteering for Water, an initiative of the Portuguese Environment Agency – ARH Algarve, which took place on Friday and Saturday in Albufeira.

The Meeting was attended by more than fifty professors, members of associations and representatives of entities from all over the Algarve. At a time when Portugal has recently experienced a serious case of public health caused by environmental reasons (the outbreak of Legionella), the topic has sparked lively debate.

On the first day, the working day culminated in a forum, moderated by the journalist Elisabete Rodrigues and having as guests Carlos Silva e Sousa, mayor of Albufeira, Isabel Soares, member of the Board of Directors of Águas do Algarve, Ana Cristina Guerreiro, regional health delegate and director of the Public Health and Planning Department of the ARS, Paula Teixeira, senior technician at the Silves Chamber and Paulo Cruz, at the Portuguese Environment Agency – ARH Algarve.

The «Environmental Volunteering for Water 2014» merit certificates were also handed out, which distinguished people, schools, associations and institutions that stood out in this area (see list below and photos).

On Saturday, there was a field trip, with an environmental volunteering session in the Ribeira de Alcantarilha watershed, where, last year, another Environmental Health problem occurred, with the pest of mosquitoes that mainly affected the neighboring town of Armação of Pear, in summer.

So it is not surprising that, among the activities planned, there was a session to learn more about the mosquito's life cycle, as well as the monitoring of water quality with an assessment of the mosquito's natural predators.
