The Alcantarilha Health Extension will not close, guaranteed this Tuesday the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve. The public institute clarified that "there is no intention of closing" the existing health unit in that location in the municipality of Silves, in reaction to the mobilization of the population to participate in a protest, which has been carried out.
According to the Algarve's ARS, a pamphlet is being distributed to the population “to publicize the holding of a demonstration on November 6, 2014, against the “alleged” closure of the local Health Extension”.
«Despite the chronic shortage of doctors specializing in general and family medicine in the region and in particular in the Barlavento Health Centers Group (ACES), the case of the Union of Parishes of Alcantarilha and Pêra is a positive exception. At the moment, all users registered in these two health extensions (Alcantarilha and Pêra) have a family doctor assigned», assured the public entity.
None of the extensions closes, but as part of the process of restructuring, reorganization of services and rationalization of human resources that is being carried out, the two facilities started operating on alternate days.
With this measure, assured the ARS do Algarve «it is possible to ensure that the population has access, every day of the week and whenever they need it, to a complete health team with a doctor and a nurse».
The public institute regrets "the political use of this situation which, with this type of attitude, only aims to create an alarmist and destabilizing scenario for the population", ensuring that it has been in permanent contact with the presidents of the Municipality of Silves and of new Parish Council of the Union of Parishes of Alcantarilha and Pêra.
