MURPIRetired people, pensioners and elderly people from the Algarve gathered this morning at the Municipal Market of Faro, "to defend the right to a dignified retirement, access to health care and the improvement of the living conditions of populations, our children and grandchildren".

The regional delegation of the MURPI Confederation – Unitary Movement of Retired Pensioners and Elderly People took advantage of the World Day of the Elderly, which is marked this Wednesday, to promote “greater awareness among large sectors of retired people, pensioners and the elderly, for the need to assume fighting, by all means, the causes of the scourges that affect them.

«In recent years, pensioners, pensioners and the elderly were also, directly or indirectly, the main victims of the austerity measures that have contributed to their growing impoverishment, with the progressive and continuous reduction of their income. Access to healthcare proximity were hampered by the general increase in user fees, high cost of medicines, closure of clinics and inpatient services, and increased transport costs for the use of health services», illustrated the MURPI, in a press release.

The movement also denounces the reduction of social protection, namely the cuts in the “solidarity supplement for the elderly, supplement for dependency, social insertion income, death and funeral subsidy and others”.

«About two million elderly people in Portugal are victims of poverty, social exclusion, loneliness and disabling illness; to intervene to change this situation is to contribute to restoring the dignity and respect to which they are entitled», defends MURPI.
