A3 ICOM posterPortimão will be the capital of Portuguese museology (and beyond) for one day. It will be tomorrow, Friday, October 31, when the award-winning Museum of Portimão receives the Autumn Meetings of Portuguese National Commission of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Portugal).

The Meetings have 115 subscribers, from North to South of the country, as well as communications and interventions by some of the greatest Portuguese and international experts on the topic under debate this year: «Museums and Management: New Bridges for Society».

Among the foreign participants, the Belgian Wim de Vos, member of the Executive Board of ICOM international and chairman of the jury of the European Museum of the Year (EMYA) is highlighted, who will speak on «Museums: building new meanings and new connections with communities? », and also Susana Soto and Karmele Barandiaran, who will present the case of the renovation of the Museo San Telmo, in San Sebastián/Donostia, in the Basque Country (Spain), in the communication «San Telmo, a museum for the Basque society, a museum for the territory'.

Other presentations will be presented, in the morning panel, on Museums and Management, with moderation by Joana Sousa Monteiro, from the direction of ICOM Portugal, by Clara Frayão Camacho, museologist, Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage ("Accreditation and Networks of Museums: paradigms and management tools at the service of society?”), and José Pedro Sousa Dias, director of the University of Lisbon Museums (“Museums and Scientific Collections in Portugal: PRISC and collaboration at a national scale to assert its role as an infrastructure of investigation").

Portimão MuseumIn the afternoon, at the panel Pontes para a Sociedade, moderated by Dália Paulo, from the direction of ICOM Portugal and director of the Museu de Loulé, in addition to the presentation of the two Basque specialists, Paulo Costa Pinto, manager of cultural and tourism projects for the Intermunicipal Community do Ave, will talk about «Sharing identity – principles and practices in the territory of NUT III Ave», and José Gameiro, scientific director of the Portimão Museum, will talk about «First Aid Box for Museums in Times of Crisis».

José Gameiro, director of the Portimão Museum, in statements to Sul Informação, stressed that this is the «first time that the Autumn Meetings of the ICOM Portugal take place in Portimão”, this initiative resulting from the fact that “there are also museums and assets here”, as well as two Algarve museologists – Gameiro himself and also Dália Paulo – integrate for the first time the direction of the Portuguese National Commission of the International Council of Museums.

«On the part of ICOM Portugal, there is a commitment to a certain decentralization here, seeking to meet a certain geographical distribution of museums».

MUSEO_DE_SAN_TELMO_Y_PLAZA_ZULOAGA«The Museum of Portimão seemed to us a privileged place for this Meeting, not only from the perspective of decentralizing the initiatives of ICOM Portugal that we intend to continue developing, but also because it is a museum of recognized national and international merit and a good credit card. -visit the Algarve and its museology», says the direction of this entity, on its website.

And what is, in concrete, going to be debated in these Meetings?

«These Meetings and these “New Bridges for Society”, which museums should build, stimulate and develop, are intended to be a strong contribution to reflection and debate on the challenges and plural paths on the role of museums in management and enhancement the heritage, scientific and cultural resources of their communities and also a contribution that brings realism and hope to the national museological context», explains ICOM Portugal.

José Gameiro adds that the objective of these Meetings, based on the theme «New Bridges for Society», is to debate «what strategies? what partnerships? with whom and how? We are going to debate what is being done in Europe and also in Portugal, where we are moving towards museums that have a social vision, which are a forum for communities, precisely because they guarantee the involvement of communities in the museum».

Rosa Silva will explain the secrets of the project - Museu de PortimãoJosé Gameiro added that the Autumn Meetings in Portimão had 115 entries, of which about half came from the Algarve. There is also a relevant representation from the Center of the country (Lisbon, Aveiro, Coimbra, Santarém) and from the Alentejo, and to a lesser extent the North, represented by the Grão Vasco Museum, in Viseu.

Distributed throughout these regions, several institutions are registered, with emphasis on museums. But there are also several Universities and Study and Research Centers, which is reflected in the professional categories represented.

Museum professionals are mostly senior technicians from various areas, such as research (history, archeology, art, heritage, anthropology), conservation and restoration, or educational services and communication offices. Also some directors (about eight) will be present, as well as auxiliary technicians.

Also represented is a group of students and professors from the University of Évora, Higher Institute of Labor and Business Sciences, New University of Lisbon, University of Coimbra and several Study and Research Centres.

"Some entities such as design or architecture offices or those that, although with paths independent of museums, have a direct connection through the various projects they share and that increasingly justify the sharing of a common language" were also registered.

In other words: good ingredients are gathered to make Portimão the national capital of Museology.
