The West entrance of Ribeirinho Park Faro it was destroyed, allegedly by the owners of the private land where it is installed. At issue, a dispute with the Chamber of Faro as to the price of the land, the purchase of which is being negotiated between both parties. The municipality is already studying “possible illegalities” in this action, despite the fact that it is “a space that is not registered as a path”, located on private land.
In statements to the Sul Informação, the mayor of Faro Rogério Bacalhau did not rule out the appeal to justice, although he emphasizes that, at this moment, it is premature to talk about it. Despite not being registered as a public road, that section has been used as such “for more than 20 years”.
“The attitude of the land owner is regrettable. Furthermore, because we are in a process of conversation, in which the situation is being analyzed and there has been no decision against their interests», said the mayor.
The destroyed area, a bridge and the path itself, is the secondary access to the newly opened leisure area of Faro, so access «can continue through the main entrance», next to Teatro das Figuras. Anyone who wants to enter on the west side will have to go through the railway.
The land in question belongs to 'Valter Tailor and two relatives', who did not agree with the price offered for the land. "We made an assessment that the land is worth 190 to 200 thousand euros, but he wants 450 thousand euros", he revealed.
This amount requested by the land owner is the same that was approved, for the acquisition of this parcel, in a Chamber Meeting and in the Municipal Assembly of FaroIn 2011.
Rogério Bacalhau confirms that there was this deliberation of Organs local authorities, but he stressed that this «was the estimated value, at the time, without any assessment having been made».
“Now there is an assessment made, which points to such 190 to 200 thousand euros. We have to defend the public interest”, he claimed, guaranteeing that, despite the deliberation, “there was never any contract for the purchase and sale of the land” that obliges the municipality to pay that amount for the space.
Negotiations will continue, but the Chamber of Faro it may expropriate the land if positions become extreme and an impasse is reached.
