The Marine Corps will help ensure the safety of unguarded beaches and support bathers this summer.

80 soldiers received specific lifeguard training and will ensure surveillance and assistance to bathers along more than 2800 kilometers of Portuguese coast, from 1 June to 30 September, announced the Portuguese Navy.

The marines assigned to this service will provide support to the National Maritime Authority, "through the operation of the complementary means of assistance from the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos assigned to the Captaincies".

They will travel in Amarok vehicles and 4×4 motorcycles, made available through a partnership between the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos (ISN) and SIVA Portugal, which are equipped with mobile communication devices provided by the Vodafone Foundation, another ISN partner .

"The implemented system has already proven its effectiveness in previous years, which can be seen by the very low number of fatal accidents recorded during the last bathing season, positioning Portugal as one of the countries in the world with the lowest mortality rate recorded in bathing accidents" , illustrated the Navy, on its website.
