All beaches in the municipality of Portimão will once again fly the Blue Flag in the next Bathing Season. The bathing areas in question are the beaches of Rocha, Três Castelos, Vau, Alvor Nascente – Três Irmãos and Alvor Poente, as well as the Marina de Portimão, announced the municipality of Portimão.

In 2014, the Algarve is, again, national record holder, regarding the number of beaches awarded the Blue Flag, with 82 distinguished bathing areas, 13 more than in 2013.

The Blue Flag is the European symbol that reflects compliance with criteria such as environmental information and education, water quality, environmental management and equipment, as well as safety and services, in bathing areas.

Its main objective is to raise the level of awareness of the need to protect the marine and coastal environment, as well as to encourage the implementation of actions capable of solving any problems detected.

«The Algarve holds the title of best beach destination in Europe, awarded in 2012 and 2013 at the World Travel Awards, and that between June and September 2013 alone the region accounted for 8,7 million overnight stays, for an annual total of 14,8 million”, recalled the City Council of Portimão.
