There are “Fruit Heroes” at the Basic School of Horta do Carmo, in Tavira. The Algarve school was one of the winners of the «Fruit Heroes – Healthy School Lunch Médis 2013-2014» initiative and its students were presented with the «Fruit Heroes Super Party», promoted by the Portuguese Association Against Childhood Obesity (APCOI ).

In addition to a performance of «Vira-Vento», the «healthiest in the country» clown and the presence of children's mascots «Sushi», «Yago» and «DJ Tec Tec». The party's animators «reminded the children of the main commandments of the “Fruit Heroes” through educational games and activities that promote physical activity».

In the end, the 316 students at that school received fruit, backpacks, books and balloons, among other healthy gifts. Diplomas were also given to the winning students.

The event marked "the success of this school in one of the main objectives of the project: to make families and the school community aware, through music, of the need to adopt healthier eating habits, especially with regard to daily fruit consumption", the APCOI.

The association's idea is "to go against the national statistics" of fruit consumption, among the youngest, which indicates that only 2 percent of children eat it every day.

In the 2013-2014 school year, the “Fruit Heroes” project involved a total of 70.357 students from 3.253 classes in 1.159 crèches, pre-school, kindergartens and elementary schools from all districts in the country, including the regions autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira.

In recent months, schools have completed several stages, with various activities, including an educational program to encourage consumption of the fruit, developed by APCOI and implemented in classrooms in collaboration with teachers and educators. During one of these stages, schools invited adults to participate in this initiative through their vote in the “Hymns of Fruit”, that is, in the songs created by the children with the purpose of sharing the important lessons about healthy eating that they learned throughout the project. .

«Fruit Heroes – Healthy School Snack 2013-2014», is developed free of charge in schools by APCOI – Portuguese Association Against Childhood Obesity, supported by Médis as main sponsor and by the US Embassy in Portugal as official sponsor.
