In Portugal, statistics reveal that around 40 percent of young people have already been involved in some dynamics of bullying, both in the role of victim and aggressor. The phenomenon cannot be ignored and its prevention must involve the entire community.

«Bullying» is the theme of the 6th Pedagogical Conference of the International School of the Algarve 2013-14, entitled «I'm Afraid of Going to School», which will be supervised by Tânia Paias at the Municipal Library of Loulé, on April 30th, starting from 21:00 pm. Admission is free.

Tânia Paias has a degree in Clinical Psychology from the Higher Institute of Applied Psychology (ISPA) and a Master's Degree in School Health from the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon.

The guest is currently developing a PhD in Forensic Science, investigating attitudes towards violence in the educational context.

Tânia Paias is a researcher dedicated to bullying: founded and directs Portal Bullying and is a regular on television, to talk about the topic.

“I'm Afraid of Going to School” is also the title of the most recent book by Tânia Paias, in which the author addresses the signs for which parents and educators must be attentive and, using real cases, presents concrete answers to the doubts that assail parents, educators and the young people themselves.

How to educate our children so that they become safe and tolerant children? The answer is a first step in preventing the young person from becoming a victim, or aggressor.

The conference will also address the issue of cyberbullying. It is a different form of violence, opened up by new information technologies and the Internet, which is no longer restricted to the school grounds.

Admission to the conference is free. The pedagogical conferences of the Escola Internacional do Algarve offer communities useful knowledge to parents and educators about the development of children and adolescents.

The next conference will take place in Faro, at the University of Algarve, in May, dedicated to the theme «Quality in Education».
