The Republic Centenary Tree was planted this Friday, March 21, in Praça da República, in São Brás de Alportel, as part of the Commemorations of the World Day of the Tree and the Forest.

In an informal ceremony, the small cork oak that was planted in celebration of the 2010st Centenary of the Portuguese Republic, in XNUMX, is now transposed to occupy its intended place in the heart of the village.

The cork oak that was designated A Árvore do Centenário has been growing for three years at Quinta do Peral, the municipality's Center for Interpretation and Environmental Education, to be later planted in Praça da República, in a symbolic gesture that takes on even more significance this year. in which the municipality of São Brás de Alportel celebrates its Centenary. A municipality that is a child of the Republic which, in this square, which is now undergoing redevelopment, pays him the deserved tribute.

The moment was marked in the presence of the president of the Chamber Vítor Guerreiro, councilors Acácio Martins and Marlene Guerreiro, the managing director of Algar, Macário Correia, the representative of the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests, Francisco Keil do Amaral, the deputy director the Group of Schools, Nídia Amaro, and a group of technicians from the municipality, and had the very special participation of about 50 students from two classes of Escola EB n.º1 who are involved in the “Devolver a Vida à Serra” Project ”.

As a way to sensitize the youngest to the important role played by trees in Nature and in our quality of life, on the date of the World Day of the Tree and Forest, two other actions were developed in two schools in the Parque Escolar: at the EB1/JI School and at the São Brás de Alportel Kindergarten, two tamarisk trees were planted and watered with the help of some students who were full of enthusiasm and motivation.

Songs and poetry reading marked the welcome that the Schools and Praça da República gave to their new residents, on a day that will be marked by the entire municipality with various initiatives and actions to raise awareness among the São Brasense community.

In the afternoon, the commemorations program continued in some educational establishments and allowed the outdoor space of the Espaço Multiusos do Bairro Social to be equipped with a new green cordon in solidarity with the planting of a group of trees, in collaboration between Algar and Associação In Loco and LINKA-te project, which works with the municipality's youth.

A true “green cord” for solidarity and social inclusion.
