15 Sapadores Florestais recently signed Work Contracts in Public Functions for an Indefinite Period, in a ceremony attended by the three Mayors who are part of the Association of Municipalities “Terras do Infante” – Aljezur, Lagos and Vila do Bispo.

The ceremony took place on the afternoon of March 24, in the auditorium of Paços do Concelho Séc. XXI and was presided over by Joaquina Matos, Mayor of Lagos, as President of the Board of Directors of the Association of Municipalities “Terras do Infante”.

This initiative took place following the common public tender procedure for the hiring of fifteen operational assistants in public functions, to exercise the functions of Sapadores Florestais in the municipalities of Aljezur, Lagos and Vila do Bispo.

The sappers will perform functions of forest management and defense of the forest, namely through preventive forestry actions, first intervention, support to combat, aftermath and post surveillance in forest fires, monitoring of fires and functions to raise public awareness of the rules of conduct concerning this matter.

After all contracts were signed, brief interventions by each of the mayors followed. Both José Amarelinho, Mayor of Aljezur (and Member of the Board of the Association of Municipalities Terras do Infante), and Adelino Soares, Mayor of Vila do Bispo (also Member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Municipalities Terras do Infante), underlined the fact that this occasion was of “great contentment” for both municipalities, referring that “although this action represents a continuity of what has been done in previous years, this time the ceremony is different, as the step here is being given – that of entering the career of the civil service – is today, almost impossible to happen”. This is a clear sign that “the mission of these men as agents for protecting our forests is indispensable in our society”, reinforced José Amarelinho.

For Adelino Soares, “the fact that there are three municipalities that are, in certain areas, working together in favor of their communities, should be an example at the national level”.

At the end of the ceremony, it was Maria Joaquina Matos' turn to speak. The mayor also made it clear that this ceremony had “a very special meaning, both because it can provide some stability in the professional lives of these 15 new employees, and because of the importance of the meritorious role and mission they play every day in protecting our forests. ”.

Incidentally recalling the “black year of fires” in 2003, Maria Joaquina Matos stressed that, “at that time, a commitment was made not to let these situations happen again, and that is what we have been working towards” .

Promising "everything to honor this position", and all the work already developed by her predecessor Júlio Barroso, the mayor said goodbye wishing all sappers the "continuation of the good work they have performed", thanking, once again, "all the commitment they have dedicated to this forest cause”.
