On November 1st, the Ministry of the Environment is going to launch the public tender for the work of artificially feeding seven beaches in three municipalities in the Algarve, in the amount of 5,4 million euros.

The announcement was made this Friday, in Lagoa, by the Secretary of State for the Environment. Paulo Lemos added that the beaches covered will be Carvoeiro, Benagil, Nova and Cova Redonda, in the municipality of Lagoa, Castelo and Coelha, in Albufeira, and also D. Ana, in Lagos.

Sebastião Teixeira, regional director of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), responsible for the works, told the Sul Informação that, although I would like “that the interventions were ready before the next bathing season”, everything will depend on the time that the bureaucratic processes will take. But, he added, "certainly that the works will be ready during the year of 2014".

In all, two tenders should be launched, one referring to Praia de D. Ana, in Lagos, and the other covering the remaining six beaches. On average, the intervention on each of the beaches should take around 15 days, with their feeding through sand dredged from the sea in front of them, as has already been done, for example, in Albufeira.

The objective is not only to guarantee the maintenance of the beaches, but also to keep bathers away from the cliffs, increasing the available area of the beach.

The Secretary of State for the Environment was in Lagoa this morning to preside over the signing of the contract for the construction of the Walkway and Rail between Algar Seco and the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, on Carvoeiro Beach.

The work, which is the result of a partnership between the Municipality of Lagoa and the Portuguese Environment Agency, under the Litoral Programme, will cost 212 thousand euros.

Secretary of State Paulo Lemos also announced that there are investments within the same program underway in Albufeira and Praia da Rocha, adding that «360 euros are being invested in the Algarve, through the Litoral Programme».
