Vila Real de Santo António City Council will maintain all social support for pre-school and first cycle students during the 2013/2014 school year, not making any budget reduction in this area, announced the municipality in a press release.

Thus, that Chamber will continue to fund, free of charge, the family support component, namely the extension of hours (until 18:00 pm) for pre-school students.

To make life easier for parents, the City Council will also provide, free of charge, curriculum enrichment activities such as English, physical education, ICT, music and natural sciences for students in the first cycle.

The municipality will also offer transportation for a study visit, on a city bus, to all first cycle and pre-school students.

In relation to social support in the first cycle, the City Council plans to help around 300 students, in the case of grade A, and about 200 students, in the case of grade B.

1st level students will be entitled to the full value of textbooks and 20 euros for school material, while 2nd level students are entitled to 50% of the value of books and 10 euros for school material.

For Luís Gomes, Mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, «these measures show that, even in times of economic restraint, the municipality continues to give priority to the areas of education and social action, clearly supporting the families that most they need».

This school year, as happened in previous years, school transport will be free for basic education students who are able to take advantage of it.

For 1st level secondary school students, transport is provided at no cost, while for 2nd level students the transport is paid for by the municipality in 75%. The remaining students at this level of education have a 50% contribution.

As for school meals, the municipality will pay the full amount to students in the 1st cycle and pre-school education in the 1st level and subsidize 50% of students at these levels of education in the 2nd level.

The council's three «Internet Spaces» will also be available to the school population (Vila Real de Santo António, Cacela and Monte Gordo), as well as school libraries, which are operating in conjunction with the Vicente Campinas municipal library.

In addition to these aspects, there is also the proximity work of the municipal teams of psychologists who, throughout the school year, work in conjunction with students, teachers and guardians.
