More than half of the 12th grade Portuguese exams that were supposed to take place today in the Algarve did not take place due to Monday's teachers' strike, according to the Teachers' Union of the South Zone (SPZS).

The level of adherence was very different from school to school and delays in starting exams were widespread.

These are the data that the union advances, through its coordinator in the Algarve Ana Simões. In declarations to the Sul Informação, the unionist also revealed that the union is still investigating whether all the examinations that were carried out complied with all legal requirements.

«We have the indication that in Vila Real de Santo António, due to the lack of teachers, students moved to classrooms where the exam was taking place, which is illegal. At the João de Deus School of Faro, we are still investigating whether it is only teachers who are carrying out the surveillance», said Ana Simões. In this case, examinations should be taking place in 14 rooms, but there were only conditions to proceed with the test in 10 of them.

In numbers, the schools with the greatest participation were the Secondary Schools of Olhão and Tavira, where only “the non-native language Portuguese exam” was carried out, of the 17 classrooms foreseen in Olhão and of the ten in Tavira.

At the Secondary António Aleixo, in Portimão, with 19 planned rooms, 16 were empty, while at the Secondary Laura Ayres de Quarteira, with 10 rooms, only four exams were held.

In Silves, half of the eight scheduled rooms were examined, in Albufeira only 3 of the 13 rooms were not tested and in Pinheiro e Rosa de Faro only two of the 11 rooms initially planned were not tested.

With regard to the Strike, membership was close to the 90 percent that the Teachers' Union indicates at national level, in the Algarve region, although there were different performances.

In the data released by Ana Simões, there were 94 percent adhesions in Montenegro, in Faro and in Silves, but there were much lower membership numbers, namely Castro Marim (66 percent) and the João da Rosa de Olhão grouping (68 percent). Still, the bulk of the schools had adhesion close to 90 percent.
