Mackerel will be in the spotlight at the I Mostra de Sabores de Olhão, which has been taking place since yesterday and continues until Sunday.

An initiative promoted by the Municipality of Olhão to which several restaurants in the municipality have joined and which Docapesca took the opportunity to carry out another stage of the Cavala Campaign, which aims to enhance this species of fish, abundant in national waters and with great nutritional value.

The best way to promote a gastronomic product is to show its versatility, when it comes to the plate, to make known different ways of cooking it and the flavors associated with them. And the campaign that Docapesca has been promoting all over the country is very popular. Another component that is increasingly valued is the health benefit that food brings, a field where mackerel also “gives cards”.

These two components will be united in an initiative that will take place in two schools in the municipality of Olhão, today, Tuesday and tomorrow morning. From 11 am, the schools João da Rosa, in Olhão (today) and Dr. João Lúcio, in Fuseta (Wednesday), will host a workshop on the theme “Fish is Health”, by Teresa Sancho of the Regional Health Administration ( ARS) from the Algarve, followed by a mackerel making lesson.

The municipality's school public will also have the opportunity to make study visits to the fish market in Olhão and to the “Conserveira do Sul” and “Freitasmar” canning factories, from today until Friday. Also on Friday, Sociedade Recreativa Olhanense will be the stage for a set of activities about the sea, aimed at children and young people, "Experience the Sea", promoted by EMEPC - Mission Structure for the Extension of the Continental Shelf and collaboration with the Center Living Science of Faro. The actions take place from 9 am to 18 pm, with a break between 13 pm and 14 pm.

After the little ones learn the benefits of Mackerel and ways of cooking it (in this case, it is expected that the part of tasting will be more valued), the general public will also have the opportunity to learn more about this species of fish and receive tips about ways to make it.

On Thursday and Friday there will be free cooking classes at the Municipal Market of Olhão, with Heads of the Algarve Hotel and Tourism School. Classes take place between 10 am and 12 pm and those interested must register at the municipal market.

On Thursday, at 17 pm, the Auditorium of the Parish Council of Olhão (Praça de Agadir) receives a meeting dedicated to the theme "Benefits of Fish for Health", with interventions on nutrition and health.

This program, the result of partnerships between Docapesca, ARS Algarve and the Municipality of Olhão, which organizes the event, serves as a complement to a varied gastronomic offer that will be available in many restaurants in the municipality.

Each Participating restaurant will present a dish of mackerel on its menu (fresh or pickled), either as a starter or main course. Between Thursday and Sunday there will also be night entertainment in collaboration with the city's bars.

According to Docapesca, Mackerel is a species rich in proteins, having a content identical to that of meat and consisting of all essential and non-essential amino acids, and rich in omega-3 fatty acids, recognized for their role in preventing diseases cardiovascular and degenerative diseases.

«Currently, it is considered that the great importance of fishery products is also due to the low levels of cholesterol (around 30 mg/100 g) and its easy digestion, which makes it suitable for consumption in all age groups. . For all these reasons, the World Health Organization and other international organizations recommend the weekly consumption of at least three fish-based meals», recalled the public company.

The Cavala Campaign is developed within the scope of the CCL – Proof of Purchase in Auction project, co-financed by the PROMAR program. The objective of CCL is to contribute to the qualitative and quantitative valuation of fish and, consequently, to the sustainability of resources, to increase the profitability of the Fisheries sector in Portugal and the remuneration of our fishermen.
