The mayor of Portimão, Manuel da Luz, visited the new wing of the Portimão Municipal Kennel yesterday, which resulted from the installation of nine boxes for dogs and a space for a cattery in an unused municipal area, next to the old kennel. it allows for better conditions of reception for abandoned animals.

The intervention, which cost approximately 35 thousand euros, was fully supported by the AACP – Associação Amigos do Canil de Portimão, through the collection of donations, and represents for the mayor “a good example of partnership between the local administration and the community”, having distinguished the role of the AACP, "which has not haggled over efforts to create the best possible conditions in this municipal facility."

The work, under the responsibility of the AACP in collaboration with the Department of Works and General Services of the Portimão Council, was not intended to increase the capacity of the Kennel, but rather to provide better living conditions for the animals collected.

That association of volunteers, officially founded about a year ago, actively collaborates in feeding, medication, sterilization, monitoring and training, with the ultimate goal of adopting the animals by families that provide them with a better quality of life.

Last year, through the Portimão Municipal Kennel, around 300 adoptions were made, with a success rate very close to one hundred percent, with a total of 40 dogs and 12 cats currently awaiting adoption.
