Finalgarve, the company promoting the mega-enterprise planned for the Praia Grande area, will make, on February 4, at 11:00 am, at the Municipal Library of Silves, a presentation on a so-called “Environmental Project” for Lagoa dos Salgados.

This presentation comes just weeks after the Ministry of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial Planning announced that decided to submit the environmental impact assessment the tourism project that non-governmental organizations fear will destroy Lagoa dos Salgados, in the Algarve.

This announcement was made on the same day that the Platform of Friends of Lagoa dos Salgados delivered in Lisbon, to the Ministry of Assunção Cristas, the online petition with more than 20 thousand signatures against this large tourist enterprise.

Finalgarve's project for Praia Grande, on the coast of Silves, was announced last year as an investment of 232 million euros, which foresees the construction of three hotel units, five tourist villages, commercial spaces and an 18-hole golf course.

On the other side of Lagoa dos Salgados, in the municipality of Albufeira, lies abandoned, among garbage, unfinished works, abandoned gardens and hundreds of dry palm trees, another large tourist enterprise that went bankrupt, Herdade dos Salgados, promoted by the CS Group Hotels, but now in the hands of BES.

The members of the Platform of Friends of Lagoa dos Salgados – which includes environmental non-governmental organizations (SPEA, Almargem, League for the Protection of Nature, A Rocha, Quercus, Aldeia), nature tourism companies and private individuals – fear that this situation will be repeated on the other side of the wetland, with the new development.
