The traditional Festa das Chouriças, in honor of São Luis, protector of the animals, takes place in the typical village of Querença next Sunday, January 20th.

This organization of the Festas Committee of the Parish and Parish Council of Querença, which has the support of the Municipality of Loulé, will begin on the 19th, at 21 pm, in the Holiday Room of the Casa do Povo de Querença, with an evening of Fados with Valentim Filipe and a guest fado singer.

On the 20th, from 11:00 am, there will be a chorizo tasting at Largo da Igreja. At 15:00, Mass is celebrated in the Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, followed by a procession through the village streets.

The culmination of the Festa starts at 16:30 pm, with the usual auction of sausages and offerings at Largo da Igreja. This moment will feature the performance of the Charolas Group of Conceição de Faro, from 17:30 am.

In the Algarve interior, where pig slaughter was an ancient tradition, families would fatten up their animal, which was the main source of food throughout the year. It was customary to ask São Luis to keep the pig in good condition for the support of the entire household, with the thanksgiving party being held annually. The belief says that January is the time to glorify the Saint who helped in the creation of the animals.

Even today, this festival brings people from all over, to Querença, who like to enjoy a good homemade sausage and participate in religious ceremonies. Over the years, the Festa das Chouriças has become one of the main tourist attractions in the interior of the Algarve, which combines the gastronomy component with the religious one, and attracts many visitors at this time of year.
