Two jetties located on Estrada Nacional 120 between Lagos and Aljezur will undergo rehabilitation works in 2013, guaranteeing «better safety conditions», announced the president of Estradas de Portugal (EP), on Friday, in Aljezur.

António Ramalho, speaking to the Sul Informação on the margin of inauguration of the repaving of the section of the regional road ER 124/267, between Aljezur and Marmelete, he added that "there are two or three rehabilitation and safety interventions" that are being carried out in 2013 on this road that connects Lagos to Santiago de Cacém.

The EP president also said that the launch of the tender for the requalification of the Pincho (still in the municipality of Lagos) and Areeiro (between Aljezur and Rogil) piers «is scheduled for March or April», and the conclusion of the works takes place 'by the end of next year'.

This and other issues related to roads and accessibility were discussed between the presidents of EP and the City Council of Aljezur, in a brief meeting before the inauguration of the repaving of the ER 124/267.

Mayor José Amarelinho, for his part, explained to the Sul Informação that both interventions provided for in the EN120 are «very important for the municipality», since this road is the main connection from Aljezur to the Algarve coast and to Via do Infante, as well as, to the north, to Odemira.

«The pier next to Pincho is outside our municipality, but the fact that circulation has been restricted at that point for a long time is an important bottleneck in accessibility to and from Aljezur». Therefore, added Amarelinho, "it is essential that the requalification works move forward, because this is an unsustainable situation."

Variant of Aljezur not forgotten

The Aljezur variant, a project that has caused controversy due to the fact that it crosses the floodplain in a corridor close to the town and which aims to remove traffic from the town center but without too far, was also discussed at the meeting between the president of Estradas de Portugal and the mayor José Amarelinho.

António Ramalho assured, in statements to our newspaper, that the Aljezur variant will be included in the «Proximity Plan», which will define the accessibility strategy throughout the country, «working within the current possibilities of the country». «This Proximity Plan will frame the priority level of this variant».

However, as mayor José Amarelinho admitted, the variant, which «continues to be a priority for us», is not «a priority with the highest level for Estradas de Portugal».

The mayor of Aljezurense also discussed with the person responsible for the EP «the creation of another bridge, just for pedestrians, next to the bridge of Aljezur», integrated in the EN120. "It is an ambition that we have, to build this bridge only for pedestrians, because this will considerably improve the safety conditions, since, nowadays, the bridge being so narrow, people circulate there with some danger."

Interestingly, less than 20 meters from the narrow road bridge of Aljezur there is already another pedestrian bridge over the stream.
