«Gender Equality – Health and Socio-Economic Development» is the theme of the colloquium that the Hospital de Faro organizes on the 13th of December.

The opening session, scheduled for 9:30 am in the Hospital auditorium, will be chaired by the member of the Board of Directors of the Hospital de Faro Luís Miguel Martins, and by the director of the Social Security District Center of Faro Ophelia Ramos.

The program continues with the presentation of various themes related to Gender Equality. From 9:45 am, Ana Celina Dias, Head of the Social Inclusion Sector of the Social Security District Center of Faro, and Noélia Oliveira, Social Work superior technician, talk about «Emerging Problems and Types of Support».
At 10:30 am, António Filhó, president of the National Board of the Association for Family Planning, presents a paper on “Gender Issues (re)producers of Exclusion in Health”.

After the break, at 11:30 am, the director of the Obstetrics Service Olga Viseu addresses “Gender Equality – Women's Sexual and Reproductive Health”.

The last communication of the program is in charge of Raul Coelho, coordinator of the Hospital Nucleus of Support to Children and Youth at Risk of Hospitalar de Faro, which will reflect and present some data on “Gender Equality and Child Violence”.

This initiative, the first of a vast program of awareness-raising, information and intervention actions, aims to bring together health professionals, as multipliers of good practices, and the general public around the reflection on essential concepts and questions regarding to Gender Equality, highlighting the importance of applying a project of this scope in a health unit.

Integrated in the Gender Equality Plan that the Hospital de Faro is being developed for further implementation, this project will involve the application of self-diagnostic questionnaires to all employees, the inclusion of training actions on Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination, as well as the creation of internal manuals on the use of an inclusive language in Institution and other supporting information materials.

According to the working group responsible for implementing this project, “full citizenship will only be achieved if women and men are aware of the need to eliminate discrimination based on social and gender stereotypes (re)producers of exclusion mechanisms . The promotion of Gender Equality and Citizenship will only be effectively carried out through action on strategic audiences that allow for the multiplication of ideas for transformation, based on citizen participation and a culture of equality”.

The Plan for Equality was designed for the 2012-2013 period and will enter into force in the last four months of 2013. It will be subject to monitoring and follow-up, through the analysis of the indicators associated with each action and will be subject to annual evaluation. Subsequently, based on the results obtained, and after analyzing the current situation in terms of equality and conciliation, new measures to be implemented will be defined.
