The PS/Faro accused the mayor Macário Correia of "manipulating numbers" and "a gross lack of rigor over the financial situation of the Chamber", following a statement released last week by the mayor from Farense, on the difficulties that the municipality is going through.

In a text entitled "The Truth of Things", Macário Correia looked back on how he found the municipality's finances and highlighted the measures he took to reverse the situation.

One of the statements in Macário Correia's statement was that, when he took office in 2009, «Faro was in an uncomfortable situation with about 90 million euros unpaid», read the text.

Numbers that the PS contests, in a press release, using the values contained in the 2011 management report and in the document that supports the PAEL – Program for Support to the Local Economy, «both elaborated by the current majority PSD/CDS-PP ».

The socialists guaranteed that, according to this document, «debts to third parties, in the short, medium and long term, totaled, as a whole, at the end of 2009, 67.577.116 euros, at the end of 2011, 67.732.264 euros and, at the end of 2012, first half of 67.474.286, €XNUMX”.

«Here it is concluded that the amounts owed at the end of 2009 and at the end of the first half of 2012 are identical, which completely contradicts the statements made by the Mayor of Faro reporting an alleged reduction of 8 million euros in the municipality's liabilities or that the debts would amount to 2009 million euros in 90, when in official reports they do not reach 70 million", concluded the PS/Faro.

Macário Correia, in the statement he issued, recalled the debts he inherited from previous executives and the management difficulties caused by the crisis. «Even in this tide of obstacles, through a rigorous and responsible management, we have managed, since 2009 to date, to reduce the global debt by around 7,6 million euros, in the Municipality as a whole (invoices and loans, Market and Algarve Stadium)» , assured the mayor.

«We now have 262 fewer employees, fewer managers, fewer expenses for telephones, cleaning, security and others. By internal measures, we cut 3 million operating expenses per year,” he said.

In this field, the PS accused Macário Correia of “for three years having promoted a campaign against the employees of the Municipal Council of Faro public opinion”, trying by this means to “justify the unjustifiable” to those same officials.
