The executive council of the Algarve Intermunicipal Community (AMAL) today compared the 15% discount on Via do Infante tolls announced by the Government to "a marketing operation", to offset "the decrease in traffic on the A22" which has already reached "60 %'.

According to AMAL, which met today in Faro, and expressed its "complete disagreement" with the purpose of "exempting toll payments on Via do Infante", the 15% discount "will obviously not solve the situation, since if, with exemptions, traffic in Via do Infante Via do Infante has already been reduced so significantly, with payments, albeit with discounts, the situation will only get worse».

In a position signed by the chairman of the AMAL executive board, the social democrat Macário Correia, the Algarve's mayors recall that “when tolls were introduced on this road, the Government recognized that one of the direct consequences of this measure was the increase in traffic on the EN125, which came to light, and promised the requalification” of the road.

However, stresses AMAL, "the truth is that the requalification works are unfinished and stopped for many months, which considerably increases their danger and has already led to an increase in accidents."

For all that, the mayors of the Algarve publicly express their "indignation at the end of the exemptions from the payment of tolls on the A22 without the EN125 requalification works being completed", stressing that "this is yet another measure that will aggravate the already existing a difficult crisis situation that is felt in the region, to which is added the lack of the promised Central Hospital and the withdrawal of the INEM helicopter».

In this context, the mayors understand “that the Algarve is being clearly disregarded”.
