The auditorium of CCDR Algarve, in Faro, will host, next Friday, October 12th, a debate on “The 2020 Strategy and its implementation at regional level: Innovation and Employment”, which will bring together European MPs, local politicians and regional technicians. The objective is to discuss the strategy that aims to get out of the crisis and create new conditions for better growth in regions such as the Algarve.

This is the first of two debates taking place within the scope of the Regional Discussion Forum 2012, which runs until November 9th and brings conferences, an exhibition, a film festival and a European competition for secondary school students to the Algarve.

As of 2007, the international financial crisis has highlighted the fact that some of the regional development policies have not yet achieved the desired objectives. In too many cases there has been a deepening of the differences in competitiveness between regions, and this inequality has contributed to the worsening of the economic situation in Europe.

The Europe 2020 strategy is the European Union's ten-year plan for growth. This strategy aims not only at getting out of the crisis, but also at revising our growth model and creating the necessary conditions to achieve a different type of growth: smarter, more sustainable and inclusive growth. The regional development strategy of the regions, for the next programming period 2014-2020, will have to be framed in the objectives defined by the 2020 Strategy.

To debate this crucial strategy, MEPs Ana Gomes and Marisa Matias, the Coordinator of the QREN Observatory, Paulo Areosa Feio, and the consultant Oliveira das Neves will gather in a panel moderated by journalist Elisabate Rodrigues.

To debate “Innovation and Employment”, Carlos Lajas, from the Innovation Agency, and Carlos Baía, Regional Director of the Employment and Professional Training Institute will be present.

The debate will also be attended by the president of CCDR-Algarve David Santos, the president of the Municipal Chamber of Faro Macário Correia and the rector of the University of Algarve João Guerreiro.

Registration is free and open at: www.ccdr-alg.pt

In addition to this debate, the Forum includes another meeting, to be held on October 19, at Hotel Eva, in Faro, dedicated to “Regional competitiveness and entrepreneurship: how to converge in a sustainable way?”

At the same time, the “Lux European Film Festival, in Tavira and in Faro, in partnership with the film clubs of these two cities.
