Dressage had its origins thousands of years ago, when man started using the horse. The word derives from the French verb “dresser”, which means “to train” the art of teaching a horse to perform all movements in a balanced, agile, obedient and rhythmic manner. It is the basis of all riding. It requires a perfect symbiosis between horse and rider, demonstrated before a jury that assigns classifications to the different exercises according to well-defined and highly rigorous criteria.

In a “Dressage” event, the horse/rider group evolves on a rectangular ground measuring 60 meters by 20 meters and performs a series of figures belonging to an imposed or free program (with music), called the reprise.

The jury assesses the ease and fluency of the “reprise” as well as the rider's discretion when communicating his orders to the horse.

The precision of the execution, the submission of the horse, the quality of the gaits, the impulsion and the position of the rider are equally appreciated, with a score from 1 to 10 being given to each exercise.
