The polar orbiting satellite Metop-A of EUMETSAT – European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites – started today, 31st of July, at 07:55:45 UTC, its 30.000th orbit.
Metop-A has traveled more than 1,35 billion kilometers since its launch on October 19, 2006, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
To ensure the continued operational service of this satellite, the second in a series of three, Metop-B, is being prepared for launch in September from Baikonur.
The Metop satellites, jointly developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and EUMETSAT, with instruments provided by NOAA / NASA and CNES, are Europe's first operational polar-orbiting meteorological satellites. They constitute the space segment of the Polar EUMETSAT System (EPS), which provide data for numerical weather, climate and environmental monitoring.
