The Municipal Program “Tavira – Active Holidays” is already in operation, running until the 29th of August. The program is intended to take advantage of the free time of young people, guiding them to carry out socially useful activities, namely, through the opening of twelve churches to tourists.

Church of Santiago, Church of the former Convent of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda (or São Paulo), Church of the Third Order of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, Hermitage of São Sebastião, Hermitage of Santa Ana, Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, Chapel of Our Lady of Consolação, Mother Church of Santa Maria do Castelo, Church of Our Lady of Livramento, Church of São Francisco, Church of São José and Church of Misericórdia are the temples that can be visited from Monday to Friday, between 10:15 and 12:30 and 14:30 and 18:00.

The opening results from the signing of a protocol between the Municipality and the Parish Church Factory of Santa Maria do Castelo, Parish Church Factory of Santiago, Third Order of Our Lady of Monte do Carmo, Venerable Third Order of São Francisco and Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Tavira in order to guarantee the organization, monitoring and management of the “Tavira – Active Holidays” Program.

At the end of the program (which corresponds to one month of participation), the Tavirense municipality is responsible for awarding a grant of 240 euros to the young participants.

With this initiative it is intended to promote the use of free time of the youngest, guiding them to the performance of initiatives that provide the conquest of volunteering habits that allow experimental contact with some professional activities and that enhance their intervention capacity, social and civic participation, contributing to the process of non-formal education and local knowledge of reality, namely, in its historical, cultural and social aspects.

Also considering the importance of the religious heritage of the city of Tavira, we tried to reconcile this Program with the opening of the churches, enabling the discovery of this valuable historical legacy for all residents and visitors.
