Between the 16th and 20th of April, the Institute of Archeology and Paleosciences (IAP) of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and the University of Algarve promotes the course on Ancient DNA and Archeology.

The course will take place from 17:00 pm to 20:00 pm, in room 2.21 of the R&D building of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences (FCSH), in Lisbon.

The main objective of this course is to introduce students and non-specialized audiences to the main applications of DNA recovered from ancient biological samples in the field of Archeology, History and Anthropology. In each session, the main studies published and currently in progress on this topic will be presented.

The first two sessions will present archaeological examples and the remaining three will discuss the concrete application of ancient DNA analysis. It is intended that the student acquires an overview of the potential and limitations of this type of study.

Those responsible for the course are Eva Fernández Domínguez, postdoctoral fellow at the IAP/Universidade do Algarve, and António Faustino Carvalho, professor at the University of Algarve.

Schedule of sessions and themes:

1st Session – António Faustino Carvalho: “The advent of the Neolithic: new models of social organization? Anthropological theory and examples of archaeological cases”.
