PSD deputy Cristóvão Norte, elected by the Algarve, in a hearing of the Agriculture and Sea Commission, questioned the Secretary of State for the Sea about the dredging plan planned for the Ria Formosa.

Recognizing “the financial constraints to which the Government is subject”, Cristóvão Norte assumed that “although the intervention priorities are to protect people and goods, in urgent situations the Government must meet the need to preserve the economic livelihood of those who works in fishing and related activities, such as Ria Formosa”.

Recalling that the Ria Formosa is “a fragile and complex ecosystem, it is sometimes difficult to estimate the results of natural dynamics and act accordingly”, the deputy stressed that “the dredging program provided for by Sociedade Polis Ria Formosa should be reassessed accordingly. that he also knows how to absorb and consider the contributions of those who know Ria in depth”.

The Algarve parliamentarian warned of the high incidence of bivalve mortality, which, in his opinion, is due to "the insufficient dynamics of water renewal, so any intervention must ensure that this constraint is overcome, which, according to the various associations, is the greatest challenge with which they are confronted, and this requires dredging in Barrinha”.

The lack of oxygenation in the water and currents is causing the destruction of channels and the death of bivalves, which causes serious problems for those who depend on the Ria.

The Secretary of State for the Sea Manuel Pinto de Abreu, although not committed to any solution, said he was available to “meet with associations to find the best solutions”.
