Since yesterday, March 1st, the Alcalar Reception and Interpretation Center has been jointly managed by the Regional Directorate of Culture and the Municipality of Portimão, becoming a hub of the Portimão Museum.

Accordingly, the Center closed this Thursday for improvement works and programming of the activities plan, reopening on March 24th with several initiatives related to the discovery of megalithic monuments and with a new schedule from Tuesday to Saturday.

Guided visits, an introductory workshop on prehistoric ceramics through manual molding and baking in "soenga" and a first "Saturday in the Family" for the youngest, are some of the first novelties, and those interested should previously register for the Museum of Portimão.

The measure follows a protocol signed between the municipality and DRCAlg, until now solely responsible for the equipment, and presupposes the formation between the two entities of a technical monitoring committee, which will prepare an educational project, in addition to promotion programs tourism and knowledge creation.

Located a few kilometers from Portimão, on the road between Torre and Senhora do Verde, that cultural space includes two megalithic buildings that are an integral part of a larger prehistoric complex classified as a national monument.

The monumental ensemble has been the object of research, safeguarding and enhancement interventions since the XNUMXth century, as it is considered a heritage resource that enhances local development, inviting a five-thousand-year time journey and providing a plausible explanation for the changes that have taken place since that time.

One of the main purposes of this open-air museum facility is to foster interest in the local heritage, supporting the creative capacity of users through visiting and enjoying the monuments, in the recreational and educational aspects.
