The municipalities of Loulé and Lagos are once again associated with what is the largest voluntary action in favor of the environment: “Earth Hour”. On March 31, for 60 minutes, from 20:30 pm to 21:30 pm, the lights will go out in the main municipal buildings of Loulé and Quarteira, as well as in public spaces and emblematic monuments in Lagos, but the idea is that residents and businesses These councils also join this initiative carried out on a global scale, promoted by the WWF – World Wide Fund for Nature.

Thus, in this “Earth Hour”, in Loulé, the Town Hall, the Eng. Duarte Pacheco building (Municipal Assembly), the Monument to Eng. Duarte Pacheco, the Loulé Municipal Market and the Municipal Center and Parish Council will be left in darkness. of Quarteira.

As part of the evolution of the “Earth Hour” campaign and the concept “Beyond the Hour and I do it if you do”, the Municipality of Loulé will also switch off the standby of all existing electrical equipment, after working hours.

In Lagos, the lighting of some buildings and public places will be turned off, namely the 7th century Town Hall. XXI and Old Town Hall, Avenida Market Facade, Slave Market, Santa Maria Church Facade, Wall in the Jardim da Constitution and Anel Verde, Facades of Forte Pau da Bandeira, Moinho de Odiáxere, Fonte da Barca, Fontes ornamental fountains in the city center (next to the old post office, behind the old Town Hall), Fonte das XNUMX Bicas, Ornamental fountains on Avenida dos Descobrimentos, São Gonçalo fountain, Rotunda dos Ventos (Meia Praia), Largo do Poço fountain in Almadena and Good Hope Caravel.

A Earth Hour is an initiative of the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) network and takes place simultaneously in 135 countries, involving millions of citizens, businesses, governments and communities, who for an hour are invited to turn off the lights to show their support for the fight against change climate.

“Earth Hour” began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2,2 million people and more than 2.000 companies turned off the lights for an hour, taking a stand against climate change.

In 2011, more than 5.200 cities and towns participated in “Earth Hour” in 135 countries, including 89 national capitals and 9 in the world, 10 of the most populated cities such as New York, Beijing, Nairobi, Hong Kong, London, Rio de Janeiro, Paris, Singapore, among others.

And many more from the biggest cities in the world, in a truly global action that took place in big cities on all continents.

More than 1700 landmarks were also left in the dark during “Earth Hour 2011”, including some of the most iconic in the world.

In Portugal, there were 97 participating municipalities, with different monuments from each city, some of the most emblematic being already common, such as the 25 de Abril Bridge, the Jerónimos Monastery, Cristo Rei, in Lisbon, and the Convento de Cristo, in Tomar .

WWF is one of the most important independent nature conservation organizations in the world, whose mission is to stop the degradation of the planet and build a future in which human beings live in harmony with nature, ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable, reducing pollution and waste.

This initiative will be joined by the private spaces of all entities, companies, families and citizens who want to join the initiative.
