Monchique City Council awarded 34 scholarships to higher education students, in an annual investment of more than 80.000 euros, announced the municipality.

The Municipality of Monchique says that it has taken “as a priority the direct support to Higher Education Students in its Social component, increasing the number of scholarships granted, from 19 scholarships in the year 2008/2009 to 26 in 2009/2010 (already with the new executive in office), 30 in 2010/2011 and now 34 scholarships for higher education students so that, despite their economic situation, they continue their academic training».

Scholarships are awarded to students residing in the municipality of Monchique, who applied under the existing regulation, who do not have sufficient means to support the expenses corresponding to the frequency of higher education.

Over 10 months, a maximum monthly allowance corresponding to 242,5 euros, or half the national minimum wage, is granted, amounting to 2 425 euros per year to young people entering or attending higher education establishments recognized by the Ministry of Education.

The attribution of these scholarships is also a way for the Municipality of Monchique to encourage the participation of higher education courses by young people in the municipality, «in this way, improving the local economic fabric, providing it with technical staff that can contribute to a greater and more balanced social, economic and cultural development”.

The municipality emphasizes that "in municipalities with rural characteristics, such as Monchique, the difficulties are even more felt" caused by "the moment of serious economic and financial crisis that the country is going through".
