Last week, on the occasion of the 2011 Blue Flag Program Seminar, which took place at Casa das Histórias – Paula Rego in Cascais, the Municipality of Lagos received another distinction for the work it has been developing in the field of information, entertainment. and environmental awareness.

This time it won the Honorable Mention with the activity “Peddy-paper – for that sea out”, held this last summer as part of the campaign “Blue Flag – Lagos na Onda do Verão 2011”.

Catarina Gonçalves, from the Blue Flag Association of Europe, pointed out Lagos as an excellent example of how a quality environmental education campaign should be developed.

In the words of this official, the Honorable Mention awarded to Lagos was due not only to the project that the Chamber applied for this year, but also to the excellent work developed over the last few years with the “Lagos na Onda do Verão” campaign. ” which was once again publicly acknowledged.

Last summer, Lagos once again flew the Blue Flag in all its bathing areas, that is, in six beaches in the municipality: Luz, Porto de Mós, Camilo, D. Ana, Meia Praia and Praia da Batata.

The Chamber considers, in a press release, that «the display of this award and the winning of awards that attest to the quality of the municipality's bathing water, the support infrastructure and the information and environmental awareness actions carried out, recognize the quality of the tourist destination Lagos of the Discoveries».

In addition to this important Quality Award, four of these beaches (Luz, Porto de Mós, Meia Praia and Praia da Batata) also boasted the Accessible Beach – Praia para Todos flag.

Also during this summer, the beaches of Camilo, D. Ana, Luz and Meia Praia were also classified by Quercus – National Association for the Conservation of Nature – as “Golden Quality Beaches 2011”.

This title was awarded to bathing areas that, between 2006 and 2009, had good water quality and, in 2010, excellent quality and analysis. In addition to these distinctions for the beaches of Lagos, there are also the awards already received this year (Praia + Acessível and 1st place in the Blue Flag environmental awareness/animation activities).

Asserting itself «aware of the responsibility that this path of excellence entails», the Municipal Council of Lagos approved, at a Council Meeting held on December 7, the renewal of the contract for the provision of cleaning and maintenance services in the bathing areas of the County.

The expense corresponding to this renewal, for a period of one year, will represent an investment of 152 904,72 euros.

“This is a financial effort that, in parallel with the activities of animation and awareness and despite the existing budget constraints, the Chamber will continue to make to maintain the environmental quality of the beaches and coastal zone”, adds the municipality.
