The Municipality of Lagos will distribute Christmas Baskets to the most disadvantaged families in the municipality, in order to provide them with a more comfortable and happy holiday.

The municipality will allocate 285 baskets and the local institutions that are associated with this solidarity action will distribute another 200, allowing a total of almost half a thousand families in Lagos to benefit from this support, at this time so symbolic of solidarity and corporate social responsibility and citizens who, despite the difficulties experienced, are still able to share part of their resources with those who are worse off.

In all, 485 Christmas Baskets will be delivered to the municipality of Lagos. The municipality will distribute baskets of different types, that is, 110 households will be given the most complete basket (which includes several essential foods such as olive oil, oil, grain, milk, cheese, biscuits, juice, fruit in syrup and other consumption items usual at this time of year, namely bolo-rei, cod, raisins and port wine).

The remaining 175 households will be given a Christmas Supplement Basket, only with products more related to the Christmas Dinner, since these families already receive monthly family food support that the municipality provides throughout the year, through Santa Casa da Compassion.

The attribution of the baskets is articulated with other local entities – namely the Parish Councils (Santa Maria, São Sebastião, Barão de São João and Luz) and solidarity institutions (Parroquia de Santa Maria and the Spiritist Association) – which also carry out the delivery of baskets, in order to avoid duplication and to include as many families as possible.

This is yet another way to fight poverty and social exclusion and to provide those who have less with a real Christmas dinner and a happier festive season.

Also in this regard, and with the aim that those on the street also have the right to a hot meal worthy of the season that is celebrated at this time of year, a meal will be prepared and offered by Santa Casa da Misericórdia to the homeless population.

This initiative, which will take place with the logistical support of the municipality, will include the distribution of meals during the afternoon of the 24th, carried out by volunteers from the Fonte de Vida Institute, in locations previously identified by the Municipality's Social Action services.
