The “serious situation” of the Only Adega Cooperativa do Algarve prompted a series of questions sent by communist MPs Paulo Sá and Agostinho Lopes to the Minister of Agriculture.

The PCP's parliamentarians want to know, among other things, if the Government intends to "adopt measures to support" the Única winery, "allowing it to overcome the serious problems it faces" and what possible measures will be.

The deputies recalled that the Única – Adega Cooperativa do Algarve, which resulted from the merger of the cooperative wineries of Lagoa and Lagos, is the last winery cooperative winery left in the Algarve region, after the closure of the Tavira (1992) and Portimão wineries (1997).

In 2009, remembers the Algarve deputy Paulo Sá, the Adega Cooperativa do Algarve had a project approved under the PRODER for the construction of new and modern facilities in the former Posto Agrário de Lagoa. “However, due to the lack of national funding, this project was never implemented”.

On a recent visit to Única, based in Lagoa, a delegation from the Portuguese Communist Party was able to learn about the serious financial difficulties of Adega Cooperativa and note “the high degree of degradation of its current facilities and the urgent need for large investments in the recovery of the space. ».

As a result of the serious problems that afflict the Adega Cooperativa do Algarve, the parliamentarians add, «production has been decreasing significantly over the last few years: 2.000.000 liters in 2009, 1.300.000 liters in 2010 and only 600.000 liters planned for 2011'.

However, they stress in the application sent to the Ministry of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial Planning, “the eventual closure of the Adega Cooperativa do Algarve, as a result of the serious situation in which this cooperative finds itself, would be a serious blow to the Algarve viticulture'.

The communist deputies begin by wanting to know "what importance does the Government attach to wine-growing in the Algarve?" and if «the Government is aware of the serious problems that the Única – Adega Cooperativa do Algarve is facing and that may even jeopardize its survival in the short term».

On the other hand, they want to know “what information can the Government give about the non-implementation of the project under PRODER, presented by Adega Cooperativa do Algarve, and which had been approved? Is the Government available to allow this project to be resumed? Under what conditions can this objective be achieved?».

In conclusion, and after asking about concrete measures to support Única, the deputies asked "what measures, in general, does the Government intend to adopt to protect and encourage wine-producing activities in the Algarve region?"

The parliamentarians also recall, in their application, that «the wine-producing activity in the Algarve has great traditions that date back to the century. XIII or even earlier times. According to Ordinance No. 207/80, of 26 April, which recognized the designation “Vinho do Algarve” as the winery name of origin and established the limits of the Algarve Demarcated Region, “the peculiar geographic characteristics of the Algarve, conferring Its climatic conditions of a markedly Mediterranean type, the nature of the soils where almost all the vines are located, the traditional varieties that have been maintained in the vineyards, the culture and winemaking conditions, constitute a set of circumstances that define a well-developed wine region. differentiated and producer of typical wines, individualized in the national wine context”.
