The Câmara de Lagos will award the alteration to the EB1 + JI School project in Vila da Luz, which aims to reduce the number of classrooms. At the same time, the municipality decided that it will not reactivate the former EB 2,3 nº 1 in Lagos.

These changes in the strategy of the Municipality of Lagos are related to the change in the evolution of the municipality's school population, which has been registering a notable decrease since the beginning of this project, as revealed by a study prepared by the Regional Directorate of Education of the Algarve.

Thus, the prior opinion for the contracting procedure for the preparation of the EB1 + JI School project in Vila da Luz, whose base value is 77.500 euros, was approved at the last Council Meeting.

In practice, this is an alteration to the existing project, since, contrary to what was initially planned, the school equipment to be built will have a reduced number of classrooms.

The Town Council of Lagos recalls that the School Center of the parish of Luz comprises the pre-school and 1st cycle areas and will serve children from all over the parish, including those from the villages of Espiche and Almádena.

The work, which has an estimated cost of 1,5 million euros and benefits from a contribution from the QREN in the order of 40%, represents the last action of the Lagos School Network Reorganization and Expansion Plan, which began about eight years ago. .

With regard to other levels of education, and based on the study recently prepared by DREAlg, regarding the evolution of the school population in Lagos, the Municipality of Lagos should also not carry out the renovation and reactivation works of the former EB 2,3 facilities. ,1 nº XNUMX of Lagos (located in the São João area).

The 3rd cycle classes of basic education at EB Tecnopolis, currently in excess of the capacity of this educational establishment, may be sent to the Júlio Dantas Secondary School, which will see it, due to the expansion/requalification works being carried out by Parquescolar , its capacity increased from 44 to 57 classes.

All in all, the total reception capacity of the four schools in the municipality (Tecnopolis, Naus, Gil Eanes and Júlio Dantas), which in 2012/2013 will be 157 classes, is higher than the total number of classes foreseen (146).

This means, according to the municipality, that "the capacity to accommodate the school equipment will accommodate the entire school population attending the 2nd, 3rd cycle of basic education and secondary education in the county, making new investment in infrastructure and the expansion of the network unjustifiable. school'.

According to DREAlg, there is a downward trend in the number of students in the municipality of Lagos, which has been more expressive, since the 2007/2008 school year, in the school population in the 1st cycle, which registers an effective decrease of about 140 students of this cycle.

Thus, "although, in the current school year, attendance at the 2nd cycle is still somewhat stable, it is expected that the decrease in the 1st cycle school population will influence the remaining cycles of education in the coming years".

On the other hand, “since 2007/2008, the 3rd cycle has already shown a decrease in school attendance corresponding to 50 students”.
