The Santo António de Arenilha Fishermen's Association, from Vila Real de Santo António, promoted last Saturday, the 10th, a charity which consisted in the donation of all the fish resulting from that day's work to Public Institutions of Social Solidarity in the municipality.

In total, around 64 kilos of fish were delivered, captured by six vessels, which were delivered by the fishermen to the institutions' heads.

The institutions contemplated with this offer were “Santa Casa de Misericórdia” and “Mão Amiga”, institutions that provide meals to the most needy in the county.

Accompanying this donation was the Mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, accompanied by some councilors.

For Councilor Maria da Conceição Cabrita, “this donation, especially at this time of year, has enormous meaning for everyone. With more of these initiatives it is possible to improve the daily lives of many people”.

For the members of the Santo António de Arenilha Fishermen's Association, it was “a moment of great symbolism that we intend to repeat more times throughout the year”.

The Association is also carrying out another solidarity initiative, which consists of collecting second-hand toys, but in good condition, to give to needy children.

According to José Romão, president of the Fishermen's Association, “if everyone helps, with simple gestures, it will be possible to provide a happier Christmas for several children”.
