The main roundabouts and arteries of downtown Faro they will have a video surveillance system as of this Wednesday, the 9th. The protocol between the PSP and the Chamber of Faro for the implementation of this system it will be signed tomorrow at 11:45 am and the chambers will be operational immediately.

Second revealed to Sul Informação the councilor of the Chamber of Faro Paulo Santos, the system, already installed and ready to work, has «eight road surveillance cameras», placed «in the Rotundas of the Hospital, Liceu, Municipal Theater, Olhão and IPJ, next to Fábrica da Cerveja in Largo of San Francisco, in the street of PSP and next to the Hotel Eva».

"We are already in tests and it starts to work, with the beginning of recordings, as soon as the protocol is signed", the District Commander of Faro from PSP intendant Victor Rodrigues to Correio da Manhã.

The system, thought out many years ago, but only now advanced, will only serve to monitor the flow of roads and not to control traffic violations. "The PSP will use the system to adapt the resources to the terrain, detect any accidents or restrictions in traffic and manage routes for emergency vehicles," explained Paulo Santos.

The Data Protection Law requires, moreover, that the PSP, which will assume responsibility for the management of the system and the Chamber of Faro, who installed it, take steps to protect people's privacy.

"Some chambers, in their rotation, catch houses, so a series of masks were created to prevent them from appearing and from entering people's privacy," revealed the councilor of the Chamber of Faro. On the other hand, the data collected can only be consulted by the PSP.

The project is now entering a second phase, where the idea “is to buy a software that allows automatic traffic counting”.

«This project will continue with the protection of municipal buildings through video surveillance, managed by the PSP. Here, people and goods are already in the field, but it is an easy matter to overcome, since they are private spaces», added Paulo Santos.

Much more complicated, taking into account experiences in other parts of the country, is the intention of the Faro local authority to place video surveillance cameras in public areas of the city.

"We have already started to carry out studies and ask for budgets to move forward with the video surveillance project in Rua de Santo António and in the bars area", said Paulo Santos.

An idea that failed in Portimão and Porto, to give some examples, due to lack of authorization from the Data Protection Commission, but which Faro thinks to be able to put it into practice. «In Coimbra, a system is already in operation in the commercial zone. On the other hand, the current Government has planned changes to the data protection law soon, to make the process more agile», he assured.

The agreement between the two entities will be signed this Wednesday during the official ceremonies of the Day of Command of Faro PSP, which will celebrate its 83rd anniversary.
