The Assembly of the Republic joins the International Year of Forests in Portugal with a draft resolution establishing the cork oak as the National Tree of Portugal.

The project was subscribed by all parties, with the first subscribers being the coordinators of the Agriculture and Sea Commission, Miguel Freitas, PS, Pedro do Ó Ramos, PSD, Abel Baptista, CDS, Agostinho Lopes, PCP, José Luis Ferreira , from PEV, Luis Fazenda, from BE and by the President of the respective Committee, Vasco Cunha.

This proposal follows a public petition promoted by the Transhumance and Nature Associations and Árvores de Portugal, with the aim of triggering the process of attributing the cork oak with the symbolic status of the National Tree of Portugal.

The signatory deputies understand that the classification of the Cork Oak as a National Tree of Portugal can contribute to making some of the problems associated with the preservation of this species more visible, while contributing to a closer look at the Portuguese forest, and that this is a precious contribution of the Assembly of the Republic for the celebration of the International Year of Forests in Portugal – 2011, instituted by the General Assembly of the United Nations.
