The Navy underlined, in a statement, that the sinking of the maritime tourist vessel «Sol de Lagos», yesterday morning, near Praia do Camilo, in the Ponta da Piedade area, had no more serious consequences due to the fact that all passengers wear life jackets.

"This situation reinforces the vital importance of the use of the life jacket, having its use allowed to safeguard the lives of 12 shipwrecked", he stressed.

According to the Navy, the alert for the overturned boat was received at 11:39 am, through the 112.pt service.

Immediately, MRCC Lisboa triggered the applicable search and rescue procedures, in coordination with the local Maritime Authority, through the Captain of the Port of Lagos.

The maritime tourist vessel «Sol de Lagos», measuring 6,4 meters in length, turned over with 11 people on board, at Praia do Camilo in Lagos, all wearing the correct life jacket.

Three individuals from another vessel threw themselves into the water to aid the overturned vessel. Given the proximity of the sandy area to the beach, the 14 castaways reached the sand area by their own means.

The Navy, in conjunction with INEM, evacuated 11 shipwrecked people to the Solaria wharf, in Lagos, to receive assistance and medical care, having committed the lifeboat “SR33” from the Ferragudo lifeboat station.

“Unfortunately, two of the castaways [two German women] who were inanimate on the beach, died, despite the attempts of resuscitation by INEM technicians”.

Two of the victims – one of them the master of the tourist boat – were evacuated by helicopter at the service of INEM to the Hospital Center of Barlavento, in Portimão.
