Vila Real de Santo António was, for the third consecutive year, distinguished nationally with the title “Autarquia + Familiarly Responsible 2011”.

The award ceremony took place on October 19, in the auditorium of the Associação Nacional dos Municipios, in Coimbra, and was attended by councilwoman Sílvia Madeira, representing the municipality.

This recognition comes from the family policies adopted by the municipalities in nine areas of action, including support for maternity and paternity, support for families with special needs, basic services, education and training, housing and urban planning, transport, culture, sport, leisure and time freedom, cooperation, institutional relations and social participation.

The good practices of the City Council with its employees in terms of reconciling work and family life were also appreciated.

With this project, the Observatory of Family Responsible Local Authorities seeks to play an important role in the context of the family economy, through its policy of support to the families of citizens and their municipal employees.

The data collected through the surveys will be available on the Observatory's website at www.observatorioafr.org, allowing all interested parties to learn about the work developed by the participating municipalities.

This year, a special distinction will also be awarded to municipalities that receive the flag for the third consecutive year. This distinction, which aims to positively signal the coherence and continuity of policies in this area, will be awarded to the municipalities of Angra do Heroísmo, Cantanhede, Évora, Tavira, Torres Novas, Torres Vedras, Vila de Rei, Vila Real and Vila Real de Santo António.
