The hundreds of passengers awaiting their flights standing and outdoors in one of the car parks at the Airport of Faro, after the terminal was closed for security reasons, they were diverted, at the end of the afternoon, to the departure area, next to the planes access sleeves.

ANA Aeroportos, fearing for the safety of people, had announced, shortly before noon this Wednesday, the closure of the passenger terminal in Faro, very affected by the very strong winds of last Monday's dawn.

But it also announced that check-in and security procedures would be moved to a 'temporary structure' set up in car park P6. From there, passengers were transported by bus to their planes.

However, in the middle of the afternoon, the so-called “provisional structure” was not in place and hundreds of passengers were standing or sitting on their bags, in the open air, on the tarmac of the car park.

Passengers complained about lack of information and conditions, not least because the portable toilets were only installed in the middle of the afternoon.

With the forecast of rain, passengers were eventually transferred, shortly after 17 pm, to a covered area in the departures area. At 18 pm, when it started to rain in Faro, people were already minimally sheltered.

Speaking to Antena1, the director of the António Correia Mendes Airport admitted that, given the forecast of strong winds and taking into account that a large part of the terminal is still destroyed and offers little security, "we opted for a security situation, we didn't risk it".
