The maintenance contract for the Primary Network of fuel management lanes (FGC) is nearing completion in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, following the numerous actions for structural prevention of the forest against fires.

According to the Municipality of Vila do Bispo, this measure aims to "increase the resistance and resilience of forest areas to fire, as well as reduce the incidence of fires and infrastructure the municipal territory."

The investment amounts to 54.398,33 euros, with a contribution of 43.260,16 euros from Community Funds, as the Municipality obtained the approval in 2010 of the application entitled "Maintenance of the Primary Network of Fuel Management Strips" (PRODER Programme, Action «Risk Minimization», Sub-action «Defense of the Forest Against Fires»).

These strips have a width of 120 meters, covering a total area of 307 hectares in the municipality of Vila do Bispo.

These cleanings consist of reducing the horizontal and vertical continuity of the vegetable fuel, that is, the felling of dead trees or trees at risk of falling, the felling of the remaining ones, harrowing/cutting of the herbaceous and shrub layer using crawler machines equipped with grids heavy or bush cutters, complemented by manual preventive forestry operations (chainsaws and brush cutters).

In 2012, within the scope of the approved application for the implementation of components of the Forest Fire Defense Network, namely the Fuel Management Plot Mosaics, the municipality will continue to intervene in the prevention of forest fires, namely by cleaning the forest, where it will invest 57.334,58 euros, which will be financed at 70% by the PRODER Programme.

To this area are added the 60 hectares of the FGC Secondary Network, executed in winter by the two Municipal Forest Intervention Teams
