The auditorium of the Caixa Agrícola of São Bartolomeu de Messines hosts on September 22, 23 and 24, at 22 pm, several concerts included in the OJA Jazz Fest 2011. The initiative, co-produced by the Orquestra de Jazz do Algarve (OJA), intends – along with the Jamm Sessions and the AJMMA Masterclass – to encourage the formation of audiences and has the support of the Municipality of Silves.

Arturo Serra, one of the most important Spanish vibraphonists, will open the first day of concerts, accompanied by OJA musicians, with a repertoire based on Count Basie and some standards and themes from the North American jazz songbook.

This is followed by the performance, on September 23, of Diogo Vida Quarteto “Alegria”, one of the most recent pianists in the national jazz scene. Also part of this quartet are tenor saxophonist Mário Santos, bassist Filipe Teixeira and drummer João Cunha.

On the last day of concerts, Nuno Ferreira, one of the most renowned Portuguese jazz guitarists, takes the stage. With Manuel Brito on double bass, José Marrucho on drums and João Mortágua on alto saxophone, this quartet presents a repertoire centered on original themes, rooted in the jazz tradition.

Admission to each concert costs 6 euros, and interested parties may obtain more information or book tickets through the OJA contacts: 913469025 (Cristina Almeida).

In addition to these concerts, OJA also performs in São Bartolomeu de Messines the AJMMA Masterclass, between September 8th and 11th, at the local Casa do Povo, with a final audition for students and a mini-concert for teachers on the 11th, at 21 pm.

Between the 8th and 10th of September, the Jam Sessions will take place, at 22 pm, at the Sociedade de Instrução e Recreio Messinense, and the Jazz de Rua initiative, between the 23rd and 24th of September, at 18 pm, in the streets of the town.
