The Villa Romana de Milreu, the Fortress of Sagres, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe and the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar will receive, between 23 and 25 September, activities within the scope of the European Culture Days, promoted by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve . 

The Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve chose as its motto “Landscape is the expression of space that is experienced by Man” (Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles), so “the proposed initiatives are “pretexts” for meeting, discovering, reflecting with the our cultural landscape, heritage and identity». 

Thus, the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, in collaboration with various institutions in the region, prepared a program for the weekend of 23, 24 and 25 September, open to the general public and with all activities free of charge and with free entry to the monuments during the three days commemorating the Journeys. 



I am | Villa Romana de Milreu (I am, Faro) 

Day 23/18/00 | XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. - Book release "Culture in Conference", editing of the reflection texts of the thematic tables for the Strategic Culture Plan for the Algarve.

Location: Pousada Palácio de Estoi 

Day 24/16/30 | XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. – Guitar recital with Paulo Galvao, with the support of the Academy of Music of Lagos.

Location: Temple of Milreu 

Day 25 | 9:00 am - 15:00 pm – “From Milreu to S. Brás de Alportel in the footsteps of the Romans”, a tour of discovery through Roman roads and urban structures. A partnership with the Al-portel Association and the Municipal Museum of Faro. Maximum number of participants 40, with registration until September 22nd for: [email protected]


Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar (Portimão) 

Day 24 | 15:30 pm - 17:30 pm - "From the Interpretative Center to the Chalcolithic village and the necropolis of Monte Canelas” – a tour accompanied by the archaeologist Elena Morán. A partnership with the Municipal Museum of Portimão and the Municipality of Lagos.


Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Vila do Bispo) 

Day 24 | 15:30 am - 16:30 pm – Arruada and Concert by the Banda Filarmónica Silvense, within the scope of the project Monuments Philharmonics, a co-production by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and the Regional Association of Philharmonics of the Algarve

Venue: Concert at the Chapel

 Day 25/17/00 | XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. – Display of “Memories … of Guadeloupe”, documentary about the two festivities that take place in the Ermida: the festival in honor of Nossa Senhora das Candeias, on February 2nd, and the Espiga festival, on the Thursday of the Ascension, commented by Artur de Jesus.

An initiative that aims to strengthen the bonds of affection between the local population and that religious monument.


Sagres fortress

Day 23 | 24 | 25 | 10:30 am, 12:00 pm, 14:00 pm, 15:30 pm, 17:00 pm – Invitation to explore the corners of the Promontory through guided visits. 

Day 24/18/00 | XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. – Conference “The conventual heritage and the urban landscape in the Algarve”, given by Catarina Marado.

Location: Auditorium 

Day 25/18/00 | XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. – Concert “Young Soloists of the Academy”, with the support of the Academy of Music of Lagos.

What are the European Days of Culture? 

The European Heritage Days are an initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union and count with the participation of 50 countries, with the mission of making the population aware of the importance of protecting, preserving and enhancing heritage. 

According to Igespar – Institute for the Management of Architectural and Archaeological Heritage, national coordinator of the event, this year's theme – “Heritage and Urban Landscape” aims to raise awareness of the need to protect and enhance the characteristics of the landscape, in cities, towns and urban agglomerations, understood in its broadest sense.
