The Ministry of Education announced the extinction of the regional directorates of Education (DRE) and their replacement by “simplified structures”, today taking office new interim leaders until the end of 2012, when the transition should be complete.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Education and Science, the measure is part of the “process of administrative restructuring and simplification” of this ministry, which includes the extinction of the Regional Education Directorates (DRE) and their “replacement by simplified structures”.

“This measure has as its main objectives to facilitate direct communication between schools and the Ministry of Education and Science, progressively increase the autonomy of schools and reduce public administration costs, reducing the number of higher directors”, reads the statement.

The Ministry led by Nuno Crato believes that this measure will also result in the “return of many teachers to schools”.

The new interim responsibles, who take office today, will “ensure the normal functioning of these structures until the process is completed”.

"The new interim directors take up their duties following the request for dismissal of the former directors, communicated to the tutelage at the first meeting between them and the Ministry of Education and Science, and in accordance with the renewal process provided for in the law", the document continues. .
